Are you nearsighted (can see up close, but not far away), or farsighted? Depending on the range of your prescription, you could fall into an excellent range of correction with LASIK. Your rate of visual recovery, while not entirely dependent on your initial prescription, can be better estimated with this information. Do you have astigmatism? Candidacy for patients with astigmatism depends on the amount in your prescription. If you are nearsighted and have astigmatism, chances are good you are still in range of correction. If you are farsighted with astigmatism, the margins of correction are narrowed dramatically due to ranges allowed by the FDA. Do you have bifocals, or use magnifiers with contact lenses for up close vision/reading vision? The deterioration of close vision is a natural process everyone experiences. There are surgical options (best demonstrated in an exam situation if not experienced with contact lenses) to aid in the reading process. This option, called monovision, though widely accepted is not for everyone. In the consultation process, it is helpful to look at where your interests are, what is your lifestyle, examine closely what activities dominate your time. By realistically understanding how you want to see, the surgical options become clearer. Are magnifiers the only glasses you need? This condition is called Presbyopia. This is an aging process of the lens of the eye that affects close vision. If already in glasses, chances are you have a bifocal lens. If the magnifiers are the only correction you use (nothing for distance) you may not be a candidate for LASIK, as this procedure does not correct the lens of the eye. Do you wear contact lenses? Hard? Rigid Gas Permeables? Soft? There is a required removal time for each lens type. Please contact us for the specified time of removal. Do you have cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, or any other conditions which, while not preventing candidacy, may prove an obstacle? Feel free to contact us with concerns.
